Why Regular Wellness Exams Matter
Wellness exams are the cornerstone of preventative veterinary medicine. Even when your pet seems perfectly healthy, a thorough examination by one of our veterinarians can reveal underlying health issues that need attention. Regular exams help us track changes in your pet's health over time, establish baseline measurements, and catch problems early when treatment is most effective and affordable.
Many serious health conditions develop slowly and silently. Without regular exams, you may not notice symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. By then, treatment options may be limited or more complicated. Regular wellness exams give us the opportunity to intervene before your pet becomes ill.
What We Evaluate During Your Pet's Exam
- Teeth and oral health
- Eyes and vision
- Ears and hearing
- Lymph nodes
- Skin and coat condition
- Musculoskeletal system and joints
- Abdomen and internal organs
- Weight and body condition
- Behavior and mental status
Diagnostic Screenings Recommended During Wellness Visits
Beyond the physical exam, additional testing provides valuable insight into your pet's overall health status. These diagnostic tools allow us to monitor internal organ function, screen for common diseases, and establish healthy baseline measurements for future comparison.
The testing plan we recommend is customized for your pet based on their age, medical background, and current health status. Our goal is to identify potential health issues while they are most manageable, not to perform unnecessary testing.

How Often Should Your Pet Have a Wellness Exam?
We recommend that all pets be seen at least annually by one of our veterinarians. A yearly exam allows us to monitor your pet's health and ensure they receive appropriate vaccinations and parasite prevention. For puppies and kittens, more frequent visits are necessary during their first year to complete vaccination series and monitor their growth and development.
For pets over the age of 12, we strongly recommend that they be seen twice yearly. Senior pets are more likely to develop age-related conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, thyroid problems, and cancer. Twice-yearly exams allow us to monitor these changes closely and adjust treatment plans as needed.
Sick Visits
When your pet isn’t feeling well, prompt evaluation is critical for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Our sick visits are designed to address a wide range of health concerns, from sudden illnesses to ongoing conditions that need monitoring.
During a sick visit, our veterinarians perform a thorough examination, review your pet’s history, and may recommend diagnostic testing such as bloodwork, urinalysis, or imaging to identify the underlying cause. Based on the findings, we develop a tailored treatment plan to help your pet recover quickly and comfortably.
Whether it’s a minor upset or a more serious condition, our goal is to provide timely, compassionate care that restores your pet’s health and prevents complications. Sick visits also give pet owners guidance on managing symptoms at home and recognizing signs that require immediate attention.
Annual Wellness Exams Versus Sick Visits
It's important to understand the difference between a wellness exam and a sick visit. During a wellness exam, we perform a thorough evaluation of a healthy pet to look for any hidden health problems. A sick visit, by contrast, is focused on evaluating and treating a specific health concern.
If your pet is showing signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, limping, lethargy), they need a sick visit rather than a wellness exam. During a sick visit, we focus on diagnosing and treating the acute problem. However, if your pet is due for their annual wellness exam, we can combine both evaluations during a single appointment.
Regular wellness exams are an investment in your pet's long-term health. We're here to help you keep your dog or cat healthy and catch any problems early.
